Description
RG-405 is a specialized semi-rigid coaxial cable designed for 50 Ohm systems where phase stability and maximum shielding are non-negotiable. Unlike flexible braided cables, RG-405 utilizes a seamless solid copper tube as its outer conductor. This construction provides 100% RF shielding, effectively eliminating signal leakage and protecting sensitive circuits from external electromagnetic interference (EMI). The cable features a silver-plated copper-clad steel (SPCCS) center conductor and a high-stability PTFE (Teflon) dielectric.
Because the outer jacket is solid copper, the cable can be precision-bent into a permanent shape and will retain that form, making it ideal for tight, organized routing within high-frequency chassis. It is often used in applications where “formable” cables (like RG-405 hand-formable) or standard flexible cables cannot meet the rigorous phase and loss requirements. It is designed to perform exceptionally well into the millimeter-wave spectrum (up to 20GHz and beyond) and is typically terminated with SMA or specialized microwave connectors.
Key Technical Advantages
-
100% Shielding Effectiveness: The seamless solid copper outer jacket provides a total RF barrier, ensuring zero signal egress or ingress.
-
Exceptional Phase Stability: The rigid construction minimizes signal phase shift caused by vibration or temperature fluctuations, critical for phased-array antennas.
-
Superior Microwave Performance: Optimized for low-loss transmission at high frequencies, remaining stable well into the 20GHz+ range.
-
Compact Semi-Rigid Profile: With an outer diameter of approximately 2.18mm (.086″), it allows for high-density integration in compact microwave sub-assemblies.
-
Permanent Form Retention: Once bent to the required specification, the cable maintains its shape, ensuring consistent electrical paths in calibrated systems.
