Description
RG-188 (specifically RG-188A/U) is a specialized, high-reliability coaxial cable designed for 50 Ohm systems where space is limited and environmental conditions are extreme. It is often considered the more rugged, stranded-core alternative to RG-178. The cable features a stranded silver-plated copper-clad steel (SPCCS) center conductor, which provides the perfect balance of high electrical conductivity and the mechanical strength necessary to withstand heavy vibration and repeated flexing.
The internal construction utilizes a high-stability PTFE (Teflon) dielectric, ensuring low signal loss and excellent phase stability into the microwave spectrum. To maintain signal integrity, it is equipped with a high-density silver-plated copper braided shield that offers superior RF isolation. Encased in a white or tinted PTFE or FEP jacket, RG-188 is rated for extreme operating temperatures ranging from -55°C to +200°C. Its robust construction makes it a preferred choice for military avionics and high-end test and measurement pigtails. It is most commonly terminated with SMA, SMB, or MCX connectors.
Key Technical Advantages
-
Exceptional Thermal Resistance: The all-Teflon construction (PTFE/FEP) allows the cable to maintain its electrical properties in extreme heat or cryogenic cold without melting or cracking.
-
Vibration-Resistant Stranded Core: The stranded SPCCS conductor is highly resistant to work-hardening and breakage, making it ideal for use in aircraft and mobile military hardware.
-
High-Frequency Microwave Performance: Optimized for stable performance through 6GHz and higher, providing a low-loss solution for high-density microwave modules.
-
Maximum Shielding & Conductivity: Silver plating on both the conductor and the braid ensures a high-efficiency signal path and superior resistance to corrosion in humid environments.
-
Compact and Maneuverable: With an outer diameter of approximately 2.5mm, it offers easy routing in tight chassis without sacrificing the power handling of a 50 Ohm line.
