Description
RG-174 is a highly flexible, micro-diameter coaxial cable designed for 50 Ohm systems where space is at a premium. Due to its thin profile (approximately 2.8mm outer diameter), it is significantly more maneuverable than larger cables like RG-58, making it ideal for routing through tight enclosures and small electronic devices. The cable features a stranded tinned copper center conductor, which provides excellent fatigue resistance and flexibility, essential for applications involving repeated movement or vibration.
The construction includes a solid polyethylene (PE) dielectric and a high-coverage tinned copper braided shield to maintain signal integrity against electromagnetic interference (EMI). While its smaller size results in higher attenuation over long distances compared to thicker cables, it is the industry standard for short-length interconnects and “pigtail” adapters. It is most commonly terminated with miniature connectors such as SMA, SMB, MCX, or MMCX.
Key Technical Advantages
-
Exceptional Flexibility: The stranded core and small diameter allow for an extremely tight bend radius, perfect for complex routing in compact electronic assemblies.
-
Space-Saving Design: Its micro-profile minimizes the footprint in dense equipment racks and portable handheld devices.
-
Rugged Stranded Conductor: The tinned copper strands prevent the conductor from breaking under physical stress or vibration, ensuring long-term connection reliability.
-
Effective EMI Shielding: Despite its size, the high-density braid provides robust protection against signal leakage and external noise in low-to-medium power applications.
-
Versatile Interconnect Solution: The ideal bridge between PCB-mounted components and external antenna interfaces.
