Description
RG-55 is a high-quality, flexible coaxial cable designed for high-frequency 50 Ohm systems. It is widely regarded as a premium upgrade to the standard RG-58, distinguished primarily by its double-braided shielding. This dual-layer shield—typically consisting of two layers of silver-plated or tinned copper braid—provides exceptional isolation and significantly reduces RF leakage, making it ideal for sensitive test equipment and tactical communications.
The cable features a solid or stranded 20 AWG silver-plated copper-clad steel (SPCCS) center conductor, which ensures excellent conductivity and high tensile strength. The silver plating enhances high-frequency performance by utilizing the “skin effect” to minimize resistance. Surrounded by a solid polyethylene (PE) dielectric and protected by a non-contaminating or UV-resistant jacket, RG-55 is built to maintain tight electrical tolerances even in harsh operational environments. It is commonly terminated with SMA, TNC, or N-Type connectors.
Key Technical Advantages
-
Superior Double Shielding: The two-layer braided shield provides much higher attenuation of external interference and lower signal egress compared to single-shielded cables.
-
Silver-Plated Conductor: Enhances electrical conductivity at microwave frequencies and provides excellent corrosion resistance for long-term reliability.
-
High Signal Integrity: Precision manufacturing ensures a very low VSWR and consistent impedance, which is critical for accurate measurements in laboratory settings.
-
Rugged and Flexible: Despite its heavy-duty shielding, the cable remains flexible enough for easy routing in tight chassis or mobile communication rigs.
-
Environmental Stability: Built with materials that resist moisture, chemicals, and UV exposure, making it suitable for aerospace and outdoor tactical use.
